Jodie Cooper was born in 1970 in Melbourne Victoria. She was brought up in an family with her mother being a teacher in hand sculptured pottery also with other family members involved in various art forms.

She commenced her creative career in hairdressing in 1986 until 2001 when she designed and built the largest indoor play centre for children in Australia. In May 2006, Jodie followed her passion for sculpting/painting in a contemporary form. Her upbringing around sculpting has lead to the unique marriage of the two arts forms into one. Her inspiration is drawn by ‘all’ things around her, which allows her to create with such diversity.

TopArts salon des refuses

Way back on 9 December 2011, we put a call out to all art students in VCE whose work wasn’t accepted into TopArts.

Unfortunately, the response wasn’t strong enough so we won’t be proceeding with an exhibition in 2012 .

We still believe it is a good idea and would love to run the exhibition in 2013, so please help us get the word out!

TopArts2013 Salon des Refuses

Are you an art student in VCE whose work wasn’t accepted into TopArts? Or do you know an art student in VCE whose work didn’t make the cut?

If there is enough interest, one hundredth gallery would like to hold a TopArts 2013 Salon des Refuses in late February 2013.

Salon des Refusés is a French for ‘exhibition of rejects’. It was generally used to describe an exhibition of works rejected by the jury of the official Paris Salon, but the term is now used widely to describe works that they may be too avant-garde for the mainstream exhibition (regardless of the venue). one hundredth gallery will sponsor this exhibition and is now calling for submissions from interested artists.

Submissions need to be no more than a page and should include a photo of the artwork along with its dimensions, details, medium etc. Submissions can be emailed to charles@100thgallery.com by 5 January 2013. If you would prefer to have a chat, please call on 0413 00 1234 or come into the gallery during any of our opening hours.

We will exhibit as many works as we can and may rotate works to provide as many new artists with an exhibition opportunity as possible.

 

The image below is of Le déjeuner sur l’herbe (The Luncheon on the Grass) by Édouard Manet. It was rejected by the Paris Salon in 1863. It now hangs in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

Fifty elephant calves migrate to Melbourne

The streets of Melbourne will host a herd of 50 fibreglass sculptures custom-made in the shape of Melbourne Zoo’s famous Asian Elephant calf, Mali, as a major community event on Melbourne Zoo’s 150th birthday celebration calendar.

In August and September 2012, the life-sized sculptures will transform the city’s streets, parks, and public spaces into an open-air  visual extravaganza of colourful stories, art, and creativity.

Melbourne Zoo Director Kevin Tanner said the Zoo was calling on Melbourne’s business community to be part of the Mali in the City event by sponsoring a Mali sculpture.

“Come August, we will be locating 50 Malis throughout the City in celebration of our 150th year and to spread the word about why it is so important that we save animals from extinction,” Mr Tanner said.

The custom-designed herd of Malis will be on display throughout the City for 6 weeks. At the end of the year, the Malis will be auctioned, with all proceeds going to the Zoo’s conservation work to fight the extinction of animals in Australia and overseas.

From April 2012, sponsors will be able to select from the submitted designs, or they can even choose to commission their preferred artist. Sponsorships are $5,000 for a designed Mali or $4,500 for sponsors who wish to arrange their own artists.

Mr Tanner has also called on artists to be part of the project by putting forward their designs for the Malis.

“Each fibreglass elephant is a blank 3D canvas, and we want artists to create innovative, inspiring and environmentally conscious designs to grace our herd of Malis.”

The Zoo is delighted to announce that renowned Australian artist David Bromley will paint two sculptures and also serve as the Mali in the City Art Patron.

From now until the 16 April 2012 artists can submit designs, with successful submissions being commissioned in May 2012.

one hundredth gallery would like to thank all of our artists, visitors, and buyers for your support throughout 2011.

one hundredth gallery was just an ‘idea’ at this time last year. In seven short months we have exhibited over 40 new artists; showed over 1,000 people through our gallery; and have had over 50,000 page views on our website.

one hundredth gallery will reopen on Thursday 5 January with ‘Utter Silence‘ by Simon O’Carrigan (Australia), Maria Ester Pena (Colombia), Gillian Warden (Australia), and Maria Antonietta Bevilacqua (Italy).

merging fashion & art

one hundredth gallery is all about exhibiting aspiring and emerging artists, regardless of their craft or medium.

Tonight we open a showcase by fashion labels Bento and Edenborough Evans.

Bento was born in 2010 from the idea that all fashion didn’t have to be throwaway and fashion forward. Effortless, timeless and enduring, Bento is built on the principle of style that has longevity – both in terms of design and quality. Each and every Bento piece goes from concept to completion within 20km of their studio in Melbourne, Australia.

Edenborough Evans welds art with fashion. Appealing equally to clients such as the National Gallery of Victoria, Marie Claire magazine and celebrity fashionista Ruby Rose, the brand blends opulent Florentine design with Melbourne street style.

The showcase will be open to the public this Friday and Saturday (the 9th and 10th of December). Both labels are offering 20% off current season stock.

introducing one hundredth [agency]

We are very excited to announce that we have opened one hundredth agency – an offshoot of one hundredth gallery focused on representing and promoting aspiring and emerging artists’ artwork outside of the physical gallery space.

This business was due to start in mid-2012, however due to a significant volume of enquiries, we have fast-tracked the set up.

To date, we have focused on only promoting artists that have exhibited in our space.  one hundredth agency now gives us the opportunity to represent and promote artists that aren’t able to exhibit in the gallery for whatever reason.

In the spirit of one hundredth gallery, we aim to keep things very simple.

one hundredth agency will provide artists with the following services –

  • We will act as a contact point for sales of up to 12 of artworks (i.e. artists can use our contact details for sales enquiries – phone, email, and physical address)
  • Artists can use the gallery as a meeting place with interested buyers (kind of like their own serviced meeting room)
  • Artists will get a personalised online exhibition with up to 12 featured artworks and a dedicated URL to use wherever they please (http://100thgallery.com/your-name)
  • Promotion of images on the http://100thgallery.com homepage on a rotation basis
  • Ongoing promotion through our facebook, twitter, and tumblr accounts and on our blog and website
  • Priority access to gallery bookings

To ensure a comprehensive level of service, one hundredth agency will only represent 100 artists per year. As an introductory offer, the annual fee for the service in 2012 is a flat $110 for the full year January-December 2012. The normal price of $220 per year will start in 2013. A sales commission of 25% of the selling price of the 12 listed artworks will also apply.

We are dedicated to the ongoing promotion of artworks by aspiring and emerging artists and by established artists who are trying something new.

introducing tina alesi

Tina Alesi is an abstract artist currently exhibiting (and selling) a collection of oil paintings and multimedia collages at one hundredth gallery.

Tina will be exhibiting her artworks until 18 December.

The official opening night for Tina’s exhibition starts at 6.30pm this evening and everyone is welcome.

Painting and creating for me always offers a unique experience into colour. When I work with paint I have the feelings of being connected to the present moment of painting and who I really am. I enjoy the process of painting and playing with colours and creating shapes. When I paint I let the present moment take over to create a painting that speaks the truth of paint and myself.

I usually like to use bright colours that are fun and cheerful. While there are wars and starvation in the world and we are all affected by the struggles of globalisation, I want to bring back happiness through paint, and colour. I work from the ideas of craft and the idea of the hand made as an integral element of my work. Expressionism and abstraction is the most honest way for me to express my inner feeling and ideas. I am influenced by contemporary cultural elements such as music, language, fashion and advertising. I am interested in the elements of what creates high Art and low Art or craft. I also play on these ideas and use irony with the art world and art culture, to create a deeper dialogue of what art is and who are artist. These influences create who I am and how culture has impacted on my life.

Creating ART is a passion I am absorbed by and the need to create and celebrate life and paint is how I feel towards my work. This body of work is a celebration of painting and colour. When people that see my work I would like them to connect with that energy and enjoy the depth of what colour and paint can do.

introducing tony edelman

Tony Edelman is an abstract artist that lives and works in Toorak. He is currently exhibiting (and selling) a collection of acrylic paintings and chalk-pastel drawings at one hundredth gallery.

Whilst Tony’s artwork is on display from today, the official opening night starts at 6.30pm tomorrow (Thursday 1 December) and everyone is welcome. Tony’s exhibition runs until 18 December.

Through the use of colour and abstraction, the works in this exhibition express what is around me, be it nature, the city and its people and the things in the home.

For me, abstract art enables the viewer to see the work in many different ways.  The art becomes personal and subjective as each person will respond to it individually.  For me, art in an abstract form is all about colour and shape.  When it hangs on a wall its expression is endless.
