one hundredth gallery has moved!

one hundredth gallery is an easy-going and enjoyable exhibition space dedicated to the exhibition and sale of artwork by aspiring and emerging artists. We also work with established artists who are trying something new.

After two years in Prahran, we have moved one hundredth gallery to a much bigger space at 200 Normanby Road, South Melbourne.

We have partnered with the kind people at Sidearm Cafe and are using their adjacent 500sqm room as our new exhibition space. Not only is the space ten times bigger than our previous gallery space; you will now be able to enjoy some breakfast or lunch with your art!

Entrance to the new gallery is via Sidearm and our opening hours will initially be the same as the cafe’s, Monday to Friday 7am – 4pm.

We look forward to seeing you soon at our new space.

Artists – submissions for the new gallery space are now open!

one hundredth gallery is moving!

We are very excited to announce that after two years in Prahran, we will be relocating one hundredth gallery to a much bigger space in South Melbourne in early 2013.

We are partnering with a cafe and will be using their adjacent 500sqm room as our new exhibition space. Not only is the space ten times bigger than our current gallery; our guests will be able to duck next door to enjoy some breakfast or lunch!

Our Prahran gallery space will be open until Sunday 23 December 2012 before closing to the public. We will announce our new address and opening hours in January.

Until then, we would like to thank you for ongoing support and wish you and your families and friends a very Merry Christmas and the best possible start to 2013!

merry christmas & happy new year!

would you like your own art gallery?

Would you like your own art gallery?

Do you know an artist or curator that does?

To enable the expansion and global domination of one hundredth gallery and one hundredth agency, I need to be able to step away from our existing gallery premises in Prahran.

In order to do this, I need to find some like-minded people (artists and curators) to run one hundredth gallery [prahran] as their own.

To keep in line with our inherent philosophy of launching the careers of aspiring and emerging artists and curators, one hundredth gallery is not looking to employ people; rather we are looking to lease the gallery to a group of up to 10 artists and/or curators.

My aim is to hand the gallery over on (or before) 1 January 2013 so that I can get moving on the next one hundredth venture. In order to proceed, I need at least 7 artists/curators to sign up.

If you’re interested in taking control of one hundredth gallery [prahran], as well as control of the sales of your own artwork, and of your artistic careers, then please email me at charles@100thgallery.com or call me on 0413 00 1234 for a (confidential) chat.

Expressions of interest close at 6.00pm on 30 September 2012; however please don’t leave it to the last minute as I will be signing people up on a ‘first come, first served’ basis between now and then.

Further Detail

What’s it going to cost?

  • each artist or curator will be charged $110 per week, or $478 per month (inc. GST)
  • there will be no commission on sales

What’s the catch?

  • the name one hundredth gallery needs to stay
  • provision must be made for exhibiting aspiring and emerging artists (outside of the group) for at least 10 weeks per year. This will generate income of around $15,000 for the group.
  • the gallery is open a minimum of Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays
  • the group will determine how and when the space is used by the group

The lease includes the business, premises, two underground car parks, all fixtures and fittings including the lighting and hanging system, as well as outgoings such as council rates, water rates, and owners’ corporation fees. Most commercial leases do not include these things.

The successful artists and curators will be responsible for the lease payments and the electricity bill (if fewer than 10 people take the space). Lease terms will be 1 or 2 years with an option to renew depending upon all of our circumstances; and we’ll run the agreement through a licensed real estate agent.

want your very own original matisse?

one hundredth gallery is ‘for everyone new to art’. So if you don’t know what a Matisse is, don’t worry, we’re here to help!

For most of 2011 our primary focus was on new artists, both aspiring and emerging. In 2012 we want to shift our focus to ‘everyone’; artists, viewers, and everyone in between.

How many of you have never stepped inside an art gallery due to fear? Fear of not knowing anything about art? Fear of the snobbery that comes with some galleries? Fear of the prices?

We aim to change all of this by providing an easy going atmosphere where people can have open conversations about what they like and what they don’t like without any judgement.

To help kick things along, we will be exhibiting six original artworks (etchings and lithographs) from our very own personal collection; three by Henri Matisse, one by Marc Chagall, one by Arthur Boyd, and one by Charles Blackman.

All of these artists have artwork in permanent collections in the very best galleries in the world; from the Louvre in Paris, to MoMA in New York City, to the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.

All works are authentic originals; come with certificates, and all are framed. Five of the six works are for sale with prices between $1,000 and $2,000. Yes, that’s right! There are no missing zeros in those numbers!

one hundredth gallery is for everyone new to art, so if you would like to see (and potentially own) art by world-famous artists that you may have studied in school, please come and see us.

These works will be on display from Saturday 25 February.

If you would like to learn more about these artists, here is what Wikipedia has to say about them!

Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse (1869 –1954) was a French artist, known for his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, as one of the three artists who helped to define the arts in the opening decades of the 20th century.

Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall (1887 –1985) was a Russian-French artist associated with several major artistic styles and one of the most successful artists of the 20th century. He was an early modernist, and created works in virtually every artistic medium, including painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and fine art prints.

Arthur Boyd

Arthur Boyd (1920 –1999) was one of the leading Australian painters of the late 20th Century. Boyd’s work ranges from impressionist renderings of Australian landscape to starkly expressionist figuration, and many canvases feature both.

Charles Blackman

Charles Blackman (1928 – ) is one of the best known Australian artists still living today, especially for the famous Schoolgirl and Alice in Wonderland series of the 1950s. He was a member of the Antipodeans, a group of Melbourne painters that also included Arthur Boyd, David Boyd, John Brack, Robert Dickerson, John Perceval, and Clifton Pugh.

changing hours

As many of you know, I have a background in business. That means that everything that I want to manage is measured. Give me a date, and I’ll tell you how many people visited the gallery, how many views our website had, and how many sales we made!

The benefit of having all of these statistics is knowing that only 6% of people visit us on Wednesdays and Thursdays; with the other 94% of people visiting us during our opening nights, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

So starting 1 February 2012 (after Jodie Cooper’s solo exhibition), our new gallery hours will be 11am – 6pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

We will also be open at any time on any day by appointment and will still hold our opening nights on Thursdays or Fridays between 6pm and 9pm.

TopArts salon des refuses

Way back on 9 December 2011, we put a call out to all art students in VCE whose work wasn’t accepted into TopArts.

Unfortunately, the response wasn’t strong enough so we won’t be proceeding with an exhibition in 2012 .

We still believe it is a good idea and would love to run the exhibition in 2013, so please help us get the word out!

TopArts2013 Salon des Refuses

Are you an art student in VCE whose work wasn’t accepted into TopArts? Or do you know an art student in VCE whose work didn’t make the cut?

If there is enough interest, one hundredth gallery would like to hold a TopArts 2013 Salon des Refuses in late February 2013.

Salon des Refusés is a French for ‘exhibition of rejects’. It was generally used to describe an exhibition of works rejected by the jury of the official Paris Salon, but the term is now used widely to describe works that they may be too avant-garde for the mainstream exhibition (regardless of the venue). one hundredth gallery will sponsor this exhibition and is now calling for submissions from interested artists.

Submissions need to be no more than a page and should include a photo of the artwork along with its dimensions, details, medium etc. Submissions can be emailed to charles@100thgallery.com by 5 January 2013. If you would prefer to have a chat, please call on 0413 00 1234 or come into the gallery during any of our opening hours.

We will exhibit as many works as we can and may rotate works to provide as many new artists with an exhibition opportunity as possible.

$4000 in prizes from ART-Town

by http://www.chapelstreet.com.au

The Chapel Street Precinct and ‘ART- Town’ sponsors are offering $4000 worth of Visual Arts Awards to Artists who participate in the 2012 ART-Town Competition.

ART-Town invites artists and the wider community to take advantage of the largest art gallery and studio in the world; the street.

Over two weekends the Chapel Street precinct welcomes 30 artists as they create artworks live on the street in four highly-visible locations; Grattan Gardens, the Colonnade, Yarra Lane and Windsor Shoe Repairs. ART-Town visitors and passers-by are treated to a rare glimpse into the artists’ creative process as they are inspired by their surroundings.

Challenging the notion that public art has to be permanent, the works created during Art Town’s live art weekends will then move to a temporary exhibition space at Chapel off Chapel.

Art-Town encourages online expressions of interest in this project from all artists, whether student, amateur or professional, and all forms of art will be considered for inclusion. The 30 artists selected to participate will be eligible for the ART-Town Artists Awards – as judged by preeminent art and community identities – which includes a $2000 first prize and a public-voted People’s Choice award.

Key Dates

  • Live Art Weekends – Saturday 25 & Sunday 26 February and Saturday 3 & Sunday 4 March 2012
  • Four locations; Grattan Gardens, the Colonnade, Yarra Lane and Windsor Shoe Repairs

happy holidays!

one hundredth gallery would like to thank all of our artists, visitors, and buyers for your support throughout 2011.

one hundredth gallery was just an ‘idea’ at this time last year. In seven short months we have exhibited over 40 new artists; showed over 1,000 people through our gallery; and have had over 50,000 page views on our website.

one hundredth gallery will reopen on Thursday 5 January with ‘Utter Silence‘ by Simon O’Carrigan (Australia), Maria Ester Pena (Colombia), Gillian Warden (Australia), and Maria Antonietta Bevilacqua (Italy).

Wishing you a happy, healthy, and safe New Year!

introducing one hundredth [agency]

We are very excited to announce that we have opened one hundredth agency – an offshoot of one hundredth gallery focused on representing and promoting aspiring and emerging artists’ artwork outside of the physical gallery space.

This business was due to start in mid-2012, however due to a significant volume of enquiries, we have fast-tracked the set up.

To date, we have focused on only promoting artists that have exhibited in our space.  one hundredth agency now gives us the opportunity to represent and promote artists that aren’t able to exhibit in the gallery for whatever reason.

In the spirit of one hundredth gallery, we aim to keep things very simple.

one hundredth agency will provide artists with the following services –

  • We will act as a contact point for sales of up to 12 of artworks (i.e. artists can use our contact details for sales enquiries – phone, email, and physical address)
  • Artists can use the gallery as a meeting place with interested buyers (kind of like their own serviced meeting room)
  • Artists will get a personalised online exhibition with up to 12 featured artworks and a dedicated URL to use wherever they please (http://100thgallery.com/your-name)
  • Promotion of images on the http://100thgallery.com homepage on a rotation basis
  • Ongoing promotion through our facebook, twitter, and tumblr accounts and on our blog and website
  • Priority access to gallery bookings

To ensure a comprehensive level of service, one hundredth agency will only represent 100 artists per year. As an introductory offer, the annual fee for the service in 2012 is a flat $110 for the full year January-December 2012. The normal price of $220 per year will start in 2013. A sales commission of 25% of the selling price of the 12 listed artworks will also apply.

We are dedicated to the ongoing promotion of artworks by aspiring and emerging artists and by established artists who are trying something new.

one hundredth agency is all about meeting these objectives.

If you would like one hundredth agency to represent you and your art, or if know an artist that we should represent, then please get in contact on 0413 00 1234 or charles@100thgallery.com
