want your very own original matisse?

one hundredth gallery is ‘for everyone new to art’. So if you don’t know what a Matisse is, don’t worry, we’re here to help!

For most of 2011 our primary focus was on new artists, both aspiring and emerging. In 2012 we want to shift our focus to ‘everyone’; artists, viewers, and everyone in between.

How many of you have never stepped inside an art gallery due to fear? Fear of not knowing anything about art? Fear of the snobbery that comes with some galleries? Fear of the prices?

We aim to change all of this by providing an easy going atmosphere where people can have open conversations about what they like and what they don’t like without any judgement.

To help kick things along, we will be exhibiting six original artworks (etchings and lithographs) from our very own personal collection; three by Henri Matisse, one by Marc Chagall, one by Arthur Boyd, and one by Charles Blackman.

All of these artists have artwork in permanent collections in the very best galleries in the world; from the Louvre in Paris, to MoMA in New York City, to the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.

All works are authentic originals; come with certificates, and all are framed. Five of the six works are for sale with prices between $1,000 and $2,000. Yes, that’s right! There are no missing zeros in those numbers!

one hundredth gallery is for everyone new to art, so if you would like to see (and potentially own) art by world-famous artists that you may have studied in school, please come and see us.

These works will be on display from Saturday 25 February.

If you would like to learn more about these artists, here is what Wikipedia has to say about them!

Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse (1869 –1954) was a French artist, known for his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, as one of the three artists who helped to define the arts in the opening decades of the 20th century.

Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall (1887 –1985) was a Russian-French artist associated with several major artistic styles and one of the most successful artists of the 20th century. He was an early modernist, and created works in virtually every artistic medium, including painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and fine art prints.

Arthur Boyd

Arthur Boyd (1920 –1999) was one of the leading Australian painters of the late 20th Century. Boyd’s work ranges from impressionist renderings of Australian landscape to starkly expressionist figuration, and many canvases feature both.

Charles Blackman

Charles Blackman (1928 – ) is one of the best known Australian artists still living today, especially for the famous Schoolgirl and Alice in Wonderland series of the 1950s. He was a member of the Antipodeans, a group of Melbourne painters that also included Arthur Boyd, David Boyd, John Brack, Robert Dickerson, John Perceval, and Clifton Pugh.

introducing chris duffy

We are very excited to open our new exhibition by Chris Duffy and Dawn Lim.

Their exhibition unofficially opened today at 11am and officially opens tomorrow at 12pm (Saturday 11 February 2012).

You’re invited to join us on Saturday to meet Chris and Dawn in person.

Here is a little bit about Chris Duffy…

Born 1966 in Melbourne Australia to an Irish father & Polish mother, Chris moved to London in 1970 and lived there until 1988. Chris returned to Australia after working  double shifts at the local pub to save money for the airfare. Since returning to Australia he has worked in the construction industry, sales, & at a funeral parlour.

Chris attended La Trobe University in Bendigo as a mature aged student in 1997 after completing the first year of a Fine Arts Diploma at Benalla TAFE.

A friend convinced me to join the local art group & try for my diploma, reluctantly I did but after just two weeks I knew I had found my calling in life and art was the only path for me. I was one of those kids who, if I wasn’t kicking a football I would be drawing. Often I would wag school to visit London’s great galleries or museums where I would copy (mostly) Rubens nudes in my text books or just stare for hours at the magnificent art on the walls. The smell of ‘old’ paint and the awestruck wonder of this experience is something that has always stayed with me….I have never known to ‘not’ want to draw or paint. – Chris Duffy

Chris Duffy’s work is primarily concerned with eroticism, reality, sensualism and colour. Chris says a recent highlight was an artist residency at a working brothel in Melbourne, ‘All the senses in overdrive tingling, nervous, watching from the shadows, the sideways glances, titillating & in a flux of constant arousal. At times funny & sometimes frightening! It was a real privilege to witness that world & paint within it. Also, I feel the work I completed during my stay there is my best to date’.

Chris’ exhibition will be open until Sunday 19 February 2012.

introducing dawn lim

We are very excited to open our new exhibition by Dawn Lim and Chris Duffy.

The exhibition unofficially opens at 11am tomorrow (Friday 10 February 2012) and officially opens at 12pm on Saturday 11 February 2012.

You’re invited to join us on Saturday to meet Dawn and Chris in person.

Here is a little bit about Dawn Lim…

I have painted and drawn from my early childhood and have became quite proficient in realism; but I always desired to use my imagination. Whilst studying, I came upon a surrealist manifesto, which excited me because it showed me how I could get started with using my imagination. It taught me that by making marks, in colour or line on my support, things can begin to take shape in my mind and I open up a dialogue with my work. I communicate with it. I absolutely love creating in this way. I now like to see paint, behave like paint, and I like the rough, untidy, gestural, spontaneous brush strokes and the magic that comes about as I work to create a composition.

Mr. Geoff Wallace, lecturer at the University of Ballarat, has said, “You cannot paint from a vacuum,” and  I agree.  You do have to have something form in your mind to communicate with the marks, but sometimes I feel like an outsider watching what takes place and am as surprised as any one else as to what results. Picasso said that his paintings were not always thought out beforehand but that they developed as he was creating them and even then they kept on developing even after he had finished with them, in the imagination of the viewer. I agree whole heartedly with his sentiment.

Dawn’s exhibition will be open until Sunday 19 February 2012.

Tomorrow, we will introduce you to Chris Duffy.

changing hours

As many of you know, I have a background in business. That means that everything that I want to manage is measured. Give me a date, and I’ll tell you how many people visited the gallery, how many views our website had, and how many sales we made!

The benefit of having all of these statistics is knowing that only 6% of people visit us on Wednesdays and Thursdays; with the other 94% of people visiting us during our opening nights, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

So starting 1 February 2012 (after Jodie Cooper’s solo exhibition), our new gallery hours will be 11am – 6pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

We will also be open at any time on any day by appointment and will still hold our opening nights on Thursdays or Fridays between 6pm and 9pm.

invitation | jodie cooper | 18 january 2012

Jodie Cooper was born in 1970 in Melbourne Victoria. She was brought up in an family with her mother being a teacher in hand sculptured pottery also with other family members involved in various art forms.

She commenced her creative career in hairdressing in 1986 until 2001 when she designed and built the largest indoor play centre for children in Australia. In May 2006, Jodie followed her passion for sculpting/painting in a contemporary form. Her upbringing around sculpting has lead to the unique marriage of the two arts forms into one. Her inspiration is drawn by ‘all’ things around her, which allows her to create with such diversity.

Please join us for the opening of Jodie Cooper’s solo exhibition on Wednesday 18 January 2012.

Jodie Cooper’s solo exhibition will open on Wednesday 18 January between 6pm and 8.30pm, and the exhibition will run until Sunday 29 January 2012.

TopArts salon des refuses

Way back on 9 December 2011, we put a call out to all art students in VCE whose work wasn’t accepted into TopArts.

Unfortunately, the response wasn’t strong enough so we won’t be proceeding with an exhibition in 2012 .

We still believe it is a good idea and would love to run the exhibition in 2013, so please help us get the word out!

TopArts2013 Salon des Refuses

Are you an art student in VCE whose work wasn’t accepted into TopArts? Or do you know an art student in VCE whose work didn’t make the cut?

If there is enough interest, one hundredth gallery would like to hold a TopArts 2013 Salon des Refuses in late February 2013.

Salon des Refusés is a French for ‘exhibition of rejects’. It was generally used to describe an exhibition of works rejected by the jury of the official Paris Salon, but the term is now used widely to describe works that they may be too avant-garde for the mainstream exhibition (regardless of the venue). one hundredth gallery will sponsor this exhibition and is now calling for submissions from interested artists.

Submissions need to be no more than a page and should include a photo of the artwork along with its dimensions, details, medium etc. Submissions can be emailed to charles@100thgallery.com by 5 January 2013. If you would prefer to have a chat, please call on 0413 00 1234 or come into the gallery during any of our opening hours.

We will exhibit as many works as we can and may rotate works to provide as many new artists with an exhibition opportunity as possible.

The image below is of Le déjeuner sur l’herbe (The Luncheon on the Grass) by Édouard Manet. It was rejected by the Paris Salon in 1863. It now hangs in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

want to paint an elephant?

sourced from Melbourne Zoo

Fifty elephant calves migrate to Melbourne

The streets of Melbourne will host a herd of 50 fibreglass sculptures custom-made in the shape of Melbourne Zoo’s famous Asian Elephant calf, Mali, as a major community event on Melbourne Zoo’s 150th birthday celebration calendar.

In August and September 2012, the life-sized sculptures will transform the city’s streets, parks, and public spaces into an open-air  visual extravaganza of colourful stories, art, and creativity.

Melbourne Zoo Director Kevin Tanner said the Zoo was calling on Melbourne’s business community to be part of the Mali in the City event by sponsoring a Mali sculpture.

“Come August, we will be locating 50 Malis throughout the City in celebration of our 150th year and to spread the word about why it is so important that we save animals from extinction,” Mr Tanner said.

The custom-designed herd of Malis will be on display throughout the City for 6 weeks. At the end of the year, the Malis will be auctioned, with all proceeds going to the Zoo’s conservation work to fight the extinction of animals in Australia and overseas.

From April 2012, sponsors will be able to select from the submitted designs, or they can even choose to commission their preferred artist. Sponsorships are $5,000 for a designed Mali or $4,500 for sponsors who wish to arrange their own artists.

Mr Tanner has also called on artists to be part of the project by putting forward their designs for the Malis.

“Each fibreglass elephant is a blank 3D canvas, and we want artists to create innovative, inspiring and environmentally conscious designs to grace our herd of Malis.”

The Zoo is delighted to announce that renowned Australian artist David Bromley will paint two sculptures and also serve as the Mali in the City Art Patron.

From now until the 16 April 2012 artists can submit designs, with successful submissions being commissioned in May 2012.
