introducing lea smith and athena daly

We had a wonderful opening for the Abstract Collective last night. Our intimate gallery was packed wall to wall with people and many now have original abstract paintings to call their own.

If you weren’t able to make it, don’t worry as the exhibition is on until Sunday 27 November. It is well worth a look!

Today we introduce you to two more of the participating artists; Lea Smith and Athena Daly. Lea has additional works online, that are not in the gallery.

abstract collective opens this wednesday

The Abstract Collective of Western Australian artists converge on one hundredth gallery this Wednesday with a love of colour and the impact of the natural environment. Each of the 15 artists investigate and explore key influences through a diversity of starting points, texture and hue to create a vibrant and stimulating display of contemporary abstract expression.

The painting group, from diverse backgrounds and ages create works that are executed in a variety of techniques as they explore the physical environment and how it impacts on our emotions and perceptions; the internal dialogue portrayed in an array of colour, line and movement.

With more than 40 artworks on display and for sale, Abstract Collective starts on Wednesday 16 November 2011 and runs until Sunday 27 November 2011.

The Grand Opening Night starts at 6.00pm on Wednesday 16 November.

Hopefully by now, you have all received your e-invitations to our next official exhibition. It is a collection of over 40 paintings by 15 Perth-based artists, aptly titled ‘Abstract Collective’.

The exhibition opens at 6pm on Wednesday 16 November and runs until Sunday 27 November.

In between now and then, we thought we would put on a ‘warm up act’ to whet your appetite.

Between Wednesday 9 November and Sunday 13 November we will be exhibiting a mix of abstract paintings by at least 5 artists. We will also be previewing work by two artists who will be showing their full collections in the gallery between 30 November and 18 December.

If you’re looking for a different type of Christmas present this year, or if you’ve be waiting to find that perfect artwork for your home or office, then please keep a close eye on us during the next 6 weeks.

During that time, we will be exhibiting over 100 unique and original abstract artworks in the gallery with prices starting at $180 and averaging around $400.

It’s going to be a huge end to 2011!

introducing colin topp

We are very excited to be currently exhibiting paintings by Colin Topp!

Colin builds up an image / shape / colour in his mind, and then releases it onto the canvas in an outpouring of energy and emotion. The colours are overlayed and interwoven to produce a canopy that depicts the raw Australian land.

The final outcome is not always what was originally conceived but it is a subconscious expression of his thoughts and feelings and how he sees the image in his mind. The process will be repeated until the final image reveals itself.

Colin’s art is full of emotion, energy and expression. He sees it as a journey through and around the canvas. When you look at the finished painting you see things below the surface that appear to be suspended and are not apparent at the first look.

This is part of the joy of discovery. Colin encourages people to lay their hands on the canvas to feel the texture of the surface, which only adds to the experience.

Colin’s aim is to create visual and physical stimulation for the viewer through his images.

Colin travelled to New York in the 1990?s to study the art of Abstract Expressionists and especially Jackson Pollock. He was taught how to plan and formulate a painting in his mind, how to use colour to express mood and how to harness emotion and energy to convey passion and feeling on the canvas.

Please click on the photo below to see examples of Colin’s work.   Many more of Colin’s paintings are at one hundredth gallery until 4 September 2011.

P.S. The photos do not do Colin’s work justice!

abstract expressionism | 24 august – 4 september 2011

by Colin Topp and Rachel Buse

We are very excited to present a new exhibition by painter Colin Topp, and sculptor Rachel Buse. Abstract Expressionism opens on Wednesday 24 August and will run until Sunday 4 September 2011. If you are able, please join us on Thursday 25 August from 6.30pm to celebrate the opening.

Rachel Buse’s sculpture explores the purpose of humanity, using a familiar language of the forms of ceramic pottery. Her concept stems from her personal image of God as a potter creating humanity,  each for their own function in his creation. Every part of a vessel works together to function for a purpose. When one part becomes more important than another, the vessel can’t function. If we fight against what we are made to be, we mutate ourselves from the original design. Rachel invites the viewer to contemplate themselves in the works, and their own function in the world.

Examples of Rachel’s work can be found by clicking here with many more sculptures in the gallery.

silent auction | update

As you may have read, we recently tested a not-so-new way of selling artwork. We ran a silent auction of three artworks as a part of introducing new art and new artists to the public.

Whilst there was sporadic bidding on the artworks, all three passed in for between $565 and $610. I hadn’t mentioned it previous posts, but the original listing price on each was $1950.

With the artist’s expectations now reset, all three acrylic on cardboard paintings from 1998 and 1999 are now priced at $990. All three paintings are extremely vibrant; are of generous proportions, are framed (with glass) and can be viewed in the gallery at 49 Porter Street, Prahran.
